Clicking on the shutter opens up a series of template drawings that can be coloured by the player. The objects become animated and are then used as part of the story. As Orly tells the story the user is asked to create an item such as a friend for a flying monster or a birthday present to give to Orly. The player is able to illustrate each of the stories with their own paintings, either original drawings or using ready-prepared objects. The game features four unique stories narrated by Orly. It focuses around the two main characters, Orly, an 8-year-old girl and her anthropomorphic talking frog friend Lancelot who lives in Jamaica. The main character Orly is voiced by Alreca Whyte. It was designed by ToeJam & Earl Productions and released by Broderbund. The game is aimed at the 5-10 year old age-group and carries an age rating of 3+. The game won the 1998 Interactive Achievement Award for Computer Innovation. Each of the drawings can also be printed.Orly's Draw a Story is a video game released in 1997 by Broderbund. This process continues with the user completing a sequence of pictures to create a cumulative story which can be saved and watched again from start to finish. When the drawing is complete, it is incorporated into the next section of animated story. At no point is the user confined to accept these drawings they can be endlessly manipulated and made into unique illustrations.

A special screen can be opened to reveal a number of pre-made drawings which can be used as-is, or modified. At this point, a drawing pad containing a few basic elements of the picture to be created appears (such as a monster's eyes, or a boat's steering apparatus), accompanied by basic drawing tools: pencils, paints, eraser, and textures and patterns. As the story progresses, it reaches a point where the user is asked to create either a character or a prop to be used in the further telling of the story. Set in Jamaica, the user is initially introduced to Orly, an adorable young waif with a lilting Jamaican accent, and her frog-sidekick, Lance, who sums up most situations by saying 'Ribbit-man.' They invite the child to venture with them into one of four storybooks as a partial illustrator/animator, or to create and illustrate the user's own, original story.Įach of the stories begins with narration by Orly. Every scene contains humor and personality. Not the average drawing and painting program, Orly's Draw-A-Story is best described as a total entertainment package.
